DESTINATION WEDDING & LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHER

52 Week Photography Challenge

My good friend Dannha-saurus and I have embarked upon a 52 week photography challenge. Lame you might say. Well to you, I say pffff. For me this is going to both force, and challenge me to totally step out of the “comfort zone” of wedding/portraiture photography. But also (hopefully) reignite an abstract and creative side that I feel is perhaps not quite present in my current portfolio.

Over the course of the next 52 weeks, starting on Sunday 7th November 2015 the two of us will be creatively challenging each other. Not only to think outside the box and create striking images. But to see this thing through. Every Sunday till November 12th 2016, we will be revealing our images.
The rules are simple. There are none. Except for the obvious. The photos need to be our own. Other than that, anything goes and all is permitted.

Week 1

The dreaded selfie. Oh how I “love” the selfie. I don’t quite see the point of this insane ritualistic practice. Other than saying, “Hay! Look at me. Look at how pouty my face is. LOOK AT ME!” But this being a challenge, I’m not about to back down just yet. LOOK AT IT!

Week 2

OK, so it would appear that when I said there are no rules to this challenge, I may have had some different impressions. This weeks challenge was LOVE. Easy enough. We all have someone, or something we love. But the conditions for this weeks challenge was to not present a photo of the latter. Ha! The degree of difficulty just went up slightly. OK. So here is my submission for this week. A shot from an engagement shoot. Charissa is totally in love. Its obvious….right?

Week 3

This week I enlisted the help of a very special assistant. My three year old son Levi. When I said to him that I needed him for a photo he was super excited. When I said it would involve him eating sweets. He nearly wet himself with joy. Here is this weeks challenge image. “Candy”

Week 4

This weeks image was the most challenging for me to do so far. “Flowers” are pretty, but quite complex things. And to do something like a “simple” flower justice was not the easiest challenge. Well, not for me any ways. It also caught me way off guard, as I was expecting it to be a total breeze.

Week 5

Einstein is a Border Collie with quite a unique little secret. He was born deaf. But one would not immediately notice this, as Einstein and his owners have a very cool way of communicating. This weeks challenge theme. “Black and White”.

Week 6

Light Painting. That is this weeks theme. This vintage radio is one of the small things I kept after my mom passed away. There are many types of light painting techniques out there. From typical writing your name, to creating incredibly intricate images. Here i shot five exposures and lit them with a small LED torch. The I just put them together in Photoshop.

Shadows can tell amazing stories, and even lead the mind to see something completely different.

Week 8

This weeks challenge was, well, quite a challenge. Trying to make an image of a colour seemed pretty simple. Till I began to try come up with some ideas. To start, I had nothing blue in my home. Nothing that would make an interesting image. And then I remembered I had these blue glass water bottles that I intended to convert into lights at some stage.

Week 9

For as long as I can remember, Tattoos have always intrigued me. I have always found them beautiful, and the people that had them, mysterious. For this weeks challenge I asked my friend Steffen if he wouldn’t mind showing them off for a photos.

Week 10

Hands are this weeks subject. And I can’t imagine not having them. I cant imagine not being able to pick up a camera, or my children. Or hold my wifes hand. This is my first attempt at double exposure. And I think it came out pretty sweet.

Week 11

For this weeks Close Up challenge I decided to try something simple and basic. Nothing too technical, or too elaborate. I swiped this little purple Minion figure from my son’s toy box and made it pose for a “close up”.

Week 13

Silhouettes can be extremely tricky to do well. I have only ever seen a handful of them that truly wowed me. So I was not too eager to get this one done as I knew it was gonna need to be something totally amazing, or different. I heard this chopper flying overhead and luckily had a card in the camera and semi charged battery. And I managed to get this before the pilot disappeared in the distance.

Week 14

Shoes are a part of everyone’s lives, and they can tell a lot bout the person wearing them. Apparently. Like my gran once told me,”I don’t trust anyone wearing white shoes”. She never gave me an explanation. These three pairs were shot on a recent maternity shoot.

Week 15

Stars have always been very fascinating to me. Always wondering what lies beyond them? Why are they there? And when I first saw a long exposure photo of stars and seeing in one image how they seem to move around the earth, it totally blew my mind. And I knew that i wanted to try create these types of images some day.

Week 17

Orange. Well this is actually a grapefruit. The oranges that I found in the fruit a veg shops were pretty pathetic. Here I drop the grapefruit into a fish tank filled with water. To light the subject I remotely triggered 2 flashes. The one on the left had an orange gel on. Hence the golden appearance of the water.
